MBTI Tips & Resources![]() Below are Rachael’s Top 20 Tips for using MBTI with teams
1. Find out the Manager’s agenda if they have requested MBTI
2. Insist on confidentiality on your part and refuse to keep any data on individuals. - that way you cannot be put into the position of being asked for that data for any other reason. 3. Assess how well they already know MBTI and then assume they know less than they are saying. 4. Always include a brief refresher! 5. Intersperse with real and practical activities and relate back to MBTI and workplace where possible 6. Compile group/organisational data that does not identify any individuals and use this on workshops, delegates love it! 7. Let people be undecided, and be tolerant where they say they do both – they may not feel safe enough to state a preference at the moment. 8. Try to spend some one to one time with each team member during the event to check in where they are. This is essential if they are doing the best fit on the day. 9. During activities, allow people to maintain their own confidentiality, or know it is ok not to be sure, by inviting them to act as observers – seek their input during debrief. 10. Encourage people to signal when they feel ‘type bashing’ is taking place. 11. Team MBTI awareness events work best when the team is relatively functional and wants to further its performance or bond more closely. Do not use MBTI with a dysfunctional team, these events need careful preparation such as 1:1 diagnostic and coaching sessions with individuals and are probably better served looking at other issues - if a team event is needed at all! 12. Get really clear about the objectives of the team event and carefully consider alternatives to MBTI and the time implication of using it with a team 13. MBTI works best when you can have a significant amount of time or plenty of follow on sessions with the group 14. Don’t expect MBTI to explain/solve everything! 15. Include materials such as Intro to Type for all delegates 16. Take along spare self-scorable forms 17. Allow people to attend even if they have not filled in the form and had feedback 18. 1:1 Feedback is best before the event but can be carried out as a group session on the day quite effectively 19. Use personal review sheets and workbooks for larger groups to prompt their learning and application of MBTI back to the workplace 20. Have fun and experiment! |
